Moonwave guide
A gentle guide to visual cycle journaling
How to turn repeated period, mood and symptom check-ins into a visual cycle journal without making unsupported health interpretations.

A visual cycle journal translates repeated check-ins into color, symbols and position. Its value is not that a picture diagnoses anything. It gives you another way to remember, compare and reflect on what you chose to record.
Choose a stable shape
A line works well for change over time; a calendar emphasizes dates; a circle emphasizes return and repetition. Moonwave uses a 28-day lunar wheel, placing each daily check-in around the mandala while still preserving calendar context.
Give each signal a consistent visual language
Use the same color for a signal from one cycle to the next. A scale can become distance, saturation or mark size, while a present-or-absent symptom can become a symbol. Consistency matters more than finding a supposedly universal color meaning.
Keep the daily ritual small
A visual journal becomes clearer when entries are regular, but the ritual should not feel punitive. Choose a small set of signals, accept blank days and add a note only when context feels worth preserving.
Review one layer at a time
A completed mandala can contain a lot of information. Start with one question: How did energy move? When did cramps appear? Which habits were logged on days that felt comfortable? Then compare another cycle rather than trying to interpret every mark at once.
Separate observation from explanation
Seeing two marks together does not prove that one caused the other. Moon phases can provide beautiful visual context without being treated as a medical explanation for menstrual timing, mood or symptoms. Use the journal to form questions, not diagnoses.
Decide what sharing means to you
A mandala can be art, a private record or context for a healthcare conversation. Before sharing, check which labels, dates and symbols are visible. A beautiful image can still contain sensitive information.
