What is a moon mandala?

A moon mandala is a circular, 28-day record of daily check-ins set against moon phases. Here is what the term means and how Moonwave builds one from your cycle.

A mandala is traditionally a circular design used across cultures as a focus for reflection - a shape built from repetition, symmetry and layered detail. A moon mandala borrows that circular form and maps it to a repeating cycle instead of a fixed image: each turn of the wheel represents roughly one lunar month, and each day adds its own mark.

Why a circle instead of a calendar

A calendar lays days out in a straight grid that resets every month, which is useful for appointments but hides repetition. A circle does the opposite: because a cycle returns to roughly the same point every 28 days or so, placing days around a wheel makes it easy to see how one cycle compares to the last one, at a glance, without flipping between pages.

How Moonwave builds one

In Moonwave, a moon mandala is generated from your own daily check-ins - period flow, mood, pain, symptoms and any custom signals you choose to track. Each entry becomes a mark on that day's position on the wheel, and the moon's phase for that date sits alongside it as visual context. Over time, the wheel fills in and becomes a personal, colorful record you can revisit.

Art and reflection, not prediction

A moon mandala is a way of looking at information you already recorded, not a forecasting tool. Moon phases are shown because they provide a natural, recognizable rhythm to align days around - not because they are presented as a cause of symptoms, mood or fertility. Two things appearing near each other on the wheel is a prompt to look closer, not a conclusion.

Where the idea comes from

Circular, lunar-based tracking is not new - people have used lunar calendars and cyclical diagrams for centuries in different cultures and traditions. What Moonwave adds is a private, digital version built specifically around menstrual cycle journaling: one that turns a repeated daily habit into a shape you can look back on, print or share, without requiring an account or sending your entries anywhere.
