Moon phases and your menstrual cycle: what the mandala shows (and doesn’t)
Moon phases and menstrual cycles are both roughly monthly, which invites comparison. Here is what a moon mandala actually shows, and what it cannot claim.

A lunar month is about 29.5 days. An average menstrual cycle is often described as about 28 days. The similarity between those two numbers is why moon phases and menstrual cycles get linked so often - and why a circular, moon-phase mandala is a natural way to visualize a cycle. It is worth being precise about what that similarity does, and does not, mean.
What a moon mandala actually shows
In Moonwave, the moon phase shown next to a day is simply the real astronomical phase for that calendar date. It gives every cycle a consistent, recognizable visual backdrop - the same way a calendar gives every month a consistent grid - so that entries have a stable position to sit against, cycle after cycle.
What it does not claim
Menstrual cycle length varies significantly between individuals and from cycle to cycle for the same person, influenced by age, health, stress, medication and many other factors. There is no established scientific consensus that moon phases cause or determine ovulation, flow, mood or symptoms. Moonwave does not present moon phases as an explanation for what you experience, and a moon mandala should not be read as one.
Why show moon phases at all, then
Because a repeating visual anchor makes a personal record easier to read and compare. A cycle that starts during a new moon one month and a waxing crescent the next is not evidence of anything on its own - but having a consistent backdrop still makes it easier to notice your own patterns, the same way graph paper makes a hand-drawn chart easier to read without claiming anything about the paper itself.
How to read your own mandala responsibly
- Treat clustering near a particular moon phase as a prompt to look closer at your own data, not as a conclusion.
- Compare multiple cycles before treating any single pattern as meaningful - one cycle is a data point, not a trend.
- Bring genuine patterns you notice to a qualified healthcare professional rather than trying to interpret them alone.
